ICCI Participates in the Inauguration of the India Pavilion at the 2026 Venice Biennale

On May 5, 2026, the Indian Chamber of Commerce in Italy (ICCI) had the honor of participating in the opening of the India Pavilion at La Biennale di Venezia, marking an important milestone in the promotion of India’s culture, creativity, and artistic excellence on the global stage.

The return of the India Pavilion to the Venice Biennale after several years represents far more than a cultural exhibition. It stands as a strategic expression of India’s growing global presence and soft power, reinforcing the country’s expanding influence not only in economics and industry, but also across art, design, culture, and the creative economy.

Presented by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, in partnership with the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre and the Serendipity Arts Foundation, the India Pavilion 2026 features the exhibition “Geographies of Distance: Remembering Home,” curated by Dr. Amin Jaffer. The exhibition explores themes of memory, identity, migration, belonging, and transformation through the works of leading contemporary Indian artists.

The Pavilion is part of the 61st International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, one of the world’s most prestigious and influential cultural platforms. Through this participation, India presents a contemporary narrative deeply rooted in its cultural heritage while engaging with global conversations on culture, sustainability, urban transformation, and identity.

The Indian Chamber of Commerce in Italy (ICCI) was proudly represented at the inauguration by Luciano Pettoello Mantovani and Ash Gujral, reaffirming ICCI’s commitment to strengthening the ties between India and Italy across business, institutions, culture, and people-to-people relations.

The initiative reflects the growing importance of cultural diplomacy in shaping international partnerships. India’s participation in the Venice Biennale demonstrates how strategic investment in culture and creativity can strengthen a country’s international standing, foster dialogue, and deepen bilateral engagement between nations.

This significant achievement was made possible thanks to the outstanding work and coordination of the Ministry of Culture of the Government of India, the Embassy of India in Rome, Indian diplomatic missions in Italy, the Serendipity Arts Foundation, and the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre.

The exhibition has also garnered significant international attention for its thoughtful exploration of the concept of “home” in an era defined by mobility, urban transformation, and global interconnectedness. The participating artists—Alwar Balasubramaniam, Sumakshi Singh, Ranjani Shettar, Asim Waqif, and Skarma Sonam Tashi—use traditional materials and contemporary artistic languages to reflect on India’s evolving identity and cultural continuity.

For the Indian Chamber of Commerce in Italy (ICCI), culture is inseparable from business. It serves as a cornerstone for building long-term strategic partnerships between India and Italy. Cultural initiatives such as the India Pavilion help forge stronger institutional ties, foster mutual understanding, and contribute to the broader ecosystem of collaboration linking the two countries.

ICCI extends its sincere thanks to the Ministry of Culture of the Government of India for the invitation and congratulates all the institutions, partners, curators, and artists involved in successfully showcasing India’s vision and creativity at one of the world’s most important international cultural events.
